A Special Treat
Christmas at Glencoe

In 1870, Confederate General Gabriel Wharton started building a new home for his young family on the banks of the New River. In honor of his wife Anne's - daughter of Dr. John Blair radford, for whom the city was named - Scottish ancestry, he named it Glencoe.

Today, more than 130 years later, Glencoe Museum provides a glimpse on the life of its original owner and showcases the rich heritage of Radford and the New River Valley. For visitors, the journey back in time starts with the elegant parlor and library of General Wharon and his wife, in his time the third wealthiest landowners of the area. Pictures and various items illustrate the development of Radford from a small railroad town to a vibrant city in the heart of the New River Valley.

The museum strives to provide visitors with new perspectives on Virginia's western region, from the earliest known history to the present. Glencoe highlights the contributions of the Native Americans, early settlers, industries, educational institutions, businesses, local artisans and many more. It frequently hosts special exhibits about various topics. Glencoe will give you an intriguing flavor of local history that is full of surprises. Come and let us surprise you!
